BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Saturday, 12th May 2018 - The Attorney General's Chambers organised the National Seminar on Awareness Building on Digital Copyright and Related Rights: 'Tapping on the New Techs and Apps: Opportunities and Challenges' at the Golden Jubilee Hall of the Law and Courts Building.
The Seminar aims to increase awareness on the recent development and enforcement of digital copyright and related rights in Brunei Darussalam and the challenges faced by local creators in protecting their copyrighted works particularly with regards to online publishing and online social media. The Seminar included presentations from experiences of local creators, enforcement in Brunei Darussalam, the meaning and effect of moral rights and most importantly developments in copyright and related rights. The Seminar further heard representative of the World Intellectual Property Organization who presented on recent developments in international protection of copyright and related rights.
In her welcoming address, the Assistant Solicitor General, Yang Mulia Dyg Hajah Nor Hashimah binti Hj Md Taib acknowledged Brunei Darussalam's recent membership to the WIPO Copyright Treaty and WIPO Performances and Phonograms Treaty in 2017. Also commonly known as the Internet Treaties. She further noted that the increase in the use of social media by the public such as entrepreneurs, aspiring artists, agencies, journalists, has given rise to the need to extend the promotion and protection of the copyright and related rights in this digital era. This new development in the dissemination of works via the Internet or any other form of digital media raises new questions concerning copyright and related rights. In particular issues related to the enforcement of those rights. With that in mind it is hoped that the Seminar would be able to give further insight into the issues and challenges but also opportunities available.
The Seminar concluded with a roundtable discussion on the practical experience of digital copyright and related rights by copyright owners in Brunei Darussalam.
