The Attorney General's Chambers in collaboration with the Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and the Rule of Law (Foundation) conducted a one-day workshop on the “Implementation of UNCLOS in Brunei – Maritime Zones & Environmental Protection" on 2nd November 2024 at the Radisson Hotel, Bandar Seri Begawan. The workshop commenced with opening remarks from Her Excellency Gerda Winkler, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Brunei, Yang Mulia Pengiran Hajah Siti Rahmah binti Pengiran Haji Mohammad, Assistant Solicitor General of the Attorney General's Chambers, and Miss Trang Pham Ngoc Minh, research fellow from the Foundation.
The objective of the workshop was to provide a platform for discussion of the main findings of the Study on the Implementation of United Nations Convention on the Law of Sea (UNCLOS) in Brunei Darussalam, with a particular focus on maritime zones and marine environmental protection. The Study is part of an ASEAN-Max Planck Foundation Cooperation Project 2022-2025 and was undertaken by the Foundation with a view to assess the implementation of UNCLOS in the internal legislation of ASEAN Member States, including Brunei Darussalam. 29 participants comprising officials from the relevant agencies in Brunei Darussalam attended the workshop.
The workshop was funded by the German Federal Foreign Office to commemorate 40 years of diplomatic relations between Brunei Darussalam and the Federal Republic of Germany.
The Foundation is an independent and non-profit organisation, founded in 2013 and based in Heidelberg, Germany. They offer technical assistance to developing countries in the form of consultation and training in various areas of law including the law of the sea, legislative drafting and public international law.
