Brunei Darussalam Reaffirms Strong Commitment to Rule of Law at 80th UN General Assembly

New York, 9 October 2025 — Delivered in the Trusteeship Council Chambers at the United Nations Headquarters, Dyg Hjh Fauziah binti Hj Sulaiman, Deputy Senior Counsel from the Attorney General's Chambers, represented Brunei Darussalam during the Seventh Plenary Meeting of the Sixth Committee at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The delegation delivered the national statement on Agenda Item 84: The Rule of Law at the National and International Levels.

Brunei reiterated its unwavering commitment to the rule of law as a fundamental pillar for peace, justice, and sustainable development, both domestically and globally. The statement highlighted Brunei's active support for the UN Charter, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the Pact for the Future, emphasising the importance of international cooperation and respect for multilateral legal frameworks.

Domestically, Brunei shared significant strides made under Wawasan Brunei 2035, including recent legal reforms such as amendments to the Employment Order, the upcoming Personal Data Protection Order, and initiatives to improve judicial efficiency and access to justice, notably the Judicial Case Management System 2.0 and a new online legal aid application platform. A key focus was also given to the Continuous Legal Education (CLE) programme, which equips public officers and legal practitioners with up-to-date knowledge and skills to promote ethical governance and a more legally empowered society.

On emerging challenges, Brunei emphasised its forward-looking approach to ethical and transparent artificial intelligence governance, aligning with international standards like the Global Digital Compact. The statement reaffirmed Brunei's firm belief that upholding the rule of law is essential for building peaceful, just, and inclusive societies worldwide.

Brunei Darussalam remains dedicated to strengthening its legal frameworks in alignment with national development goals and international obligations. The Government is committed to ensuring that justice is accessible, equitable, and administered effectively, thereby supporting peace, stability, and sustainable development both domestically and internationally.
