Mission

• • • To Provide Quality Legal Advice for Government Ministries and Departments, and Statutory Bodies

The Civil Division provides legal advice to Government ministries and departments, and statutory bodies, on a wide range of legal issues. In particular, the Division provides legal advice on the interpretation and application of laws, contracts as well as other legal documents, including on disputes or issues arising under a contract or other legal documents. The Division also provides legal advice on proposed new legislation and legislative amendment initiatives.

The Division assists in the drafting, vetting and negotiating of contracts, Memoranda of Understanding and other legal documents.

The Division is also involved in matters relating to the Brunei legal profession, in particular in matters of admissions of advocates and solicitors to the Brunei Bar.

The Division acts as the Government’s representative, including representing the Official Receiver or Probate Officer, in civil cases and other legal proceedings, including debt recovery on behalf of the Government and proceedings under the Legal Profession Act (Chapter 132).
